Your telegram No. 147, was repeated to Hong Kong and Canton.
Following st .t to-day to Governor of Hong Kong for communication to Consul General at Canton.
I discussed Canton station again to-day with Prime Minister. He told me Central Government had yesterday sent an ultimatum hy telegraph to Li and Tsen warning them that if they did not desist from hostilities within 3 days troops would be moved against them from Pukien and Kiangsi. He said that there were 30,000 troops in these provinces and as it was estimated that Lng could still hold out for a month they would reach Canton in ample time to save the sitation. But he thought warning accompanied by a a payment of $800,000 to Tsen if he really retired would suffice and that a resort to force would be
vmecessary.
